Best Perfumes for a Hyderabadi Wedding

A Hyderabadi wedding is a week, not a day. Mangni, sanchaq, mehendi, the nikah, the valima, and a dawat somewhere in the middle — and the clothes are among the most fragile in India. A khada dupatta is metres of zari-bordered net worn with a kurta and farshi pyjama. Zardozi, salma-sitara, kamdani and tilla work run through everything. The rule: never on the clothes

Perfume stains silk, and it permanently dulls zari, zardozi, salma-sitara, kamdani and every kind of metallic thread. On a khada dupatta — which is frequently borrowed, frequently inherited, and almost always more expensive than the perfume — that damage cannot be undone by dry cleaning or by anything else.

So: moisturise, spray on skin, let it dry completely, then dress. Nothing on the dupatta, nothing on the sehra, and never spray into a room where an outfit is hanging — airborne mist settles on zari just as effectively as a direct spray does.

Attar, itr and eau de parfum

Hyderabad has a living attar tradition, and at a wedding you will often be offered itr from a small bottle by an older relative. Take it, and then know that an alcohol-based eau de parfum and an oil-based attar do not layer — both are complete compositions and they compete. If you have accepted itr on one wrist, leave your own fragrance on the other side, or skip it for that function.

The practical difference: attar sits flush against the skin and projects almost nothing; an EDP opens brightly and moves outward. Apply an EDP earlier than you would an attar — about an hour before — so that what people meet in a crowded hall is the settled heart of it.

Kusum — for the nikah itself

Kusum is jasmine into tuberose over rangoon creeper, and nothing else. A nikah is a quiet, seated, crowded occasion, often with an all-women gathering in a closed room, and Kusum's habit of staying flush against the skin is exactly the right behaviour. It also reads as the most traditional of the six. Two sprays, an hour before.

Aaranya — for the winter late nights

Aaranya is Calabrian bergamot over Sichuan pepper, lavender and star anise, on Papua New Guinea vanilla and ambroxan. Lehar opens apple, bergamot, lemon and cinnamon, through watery notes, orange blossom, cardamom and plum, to ambergris, driftwood, musk and patchouli — the right weight for a daytime lunch or a shopping run in Charminar for bangles and dupattas. Neer, bergamot, green tangerine and neroli over marine notes, jasmine and rosemary on cedarwood and patchouli, is the cleanest of the six and the one for the unglamorous hours: running between houses, sitting in traffic to Banjara Hills, a hot afternoon of arrangements.

The dawat problem

A Hyderabadi dawat is a lot of food in a closed room — biryani, haleem, mutton, ghee, kewra and saffron. Kewra in particular is itself a fragrance, and a heavy sweet perfume in that air begins to read as part of the meal.
