Why the conditions are unusual

• It is genuinely cold, and often wet. Standing near or in water at 5:30am in November suppresses projection considerably. A light scent will read as almost nothing.
• The ghat is dense with people and with the smell of river water, wet earth, incense, sugarcane and frying thekua. Anything sweet enters into direct competition with the prasad and loses.
• You will be on your feet for hours, often carrying weight, in layers.

Once the fast is broken and the family sits down to eat, the constraint lifts and the cold evening is a good setting for something with more depth.
