Best Perfumes for Delhi Winter Fog and Smog

Delhi from mid-November to January is the best fragrance weather in India, and the most misunderstood. Cold air suppresses evaporation, so scents last longer and project less. That means you can finally wear the heavy bottle you bought in July. It also means the smog sitting in that same still air is competing with you.

What cold, still air does

• Longevity goes up sharply. Low skin temperature slows evaporation. A scent that gave you six hours in May will comfortably run all day in January.
• Projection drops. Cold air does not carry molecules well, so the same two sprays read quieter. This is why light fresh scents feel thin and disappointing in December.
• Your skin is drier than at any other time. Cold outdoor air plus indoor heating strips it, and dry skin cannot hold fragrance.
• Smog is an odour of its own. Particulate haze carries a flat, smoky-metallic smell that clings to hair, wool and jacket collars. A delicate citrus does not survive next to it.

Neer and Lehar — the two fresh scents — are the right answer for Delhi's summer and the wrong one for January. Neer's cedarwood-patchouli base means it still performs, but a marine-fresh profile in cold, hazy air reads thin. Save them for March.

Cold-weather application

1. Moisturise, then apply. Winter Delhi skin is the driest it gets all year, and this matters more than the bottle you choose.
