How Long Does a 50ml Perfume Bottle Last? (Real Numbers)

This is one of the few perfume questions with a real answer, so here it is before anything else.

The maths

A standard atomiser releases roughly 0.1ml per spray. So a 50ml bottle holds approximately 500 sprays. Nozzles vary by about 20 percent either way, so treat 450 to 550 as the honest range.

Most people are not daily wearers. If you wear perfume on working days and skip Sundays, a 50ml at 4 sprays lasts you most of a year.

Why 50ml is the right size for most Indians

Three reasons, and none of them are about the shelf.

• You will finish it before it turns. An opened bottle stays at its best for roughly 2 to 3 years. A 100ml at 3 sprays a day takes 11 months - fine. A 100ml you only wear on occasions takes four years, and by then the top notes have flattened.

What actually makes a bottle run out faster

• Weak fragrance, heavy hand. If a scent is faint you spray more. An Eau de Parfum concentration needs fewer sprays than an Eau de Toilette for the same effect, which is why it works out cheaper per wear even at a higher bottle price.
• Spraying clothes instead of skin. Fabric needs more product for the same intensity.
• Dry skin. It burns through fragrance, so people re-apply at lunch. Moisturising first genuinely halves your consumption.
