How to Wear Perfume With a Paithani Saree
A Paithani is handwoven silk with real metallic zari, often bought for a wedding and kept for thirty years. It is the single most expensive thing most Maharashtrian families own, and perfume is one of the few everyday products that can damage it permanently. The good news is that the fix takes three minutes and costs nothing.
Why perfume damages silk and zari
- Fragrance oils stain. Silk is a protein fibre that absorbs oil and does not release it. The mark is usually invisible on the day and shows up as a yellow patch months later.
- Alcohol dulls zari. Real zari is silver or silver-gilt thread. Repeated alcohol contact tarnishes it and the shine does not come back.
- Dry-cleaning does not reliably remove it. By the time you see the stain, it has set.
The correct order
- Shower, dry, moisturise. Fragrance holds far better on hydrated skin, which means you need less of it.
- Apply to skin only — base of the throat, behind the ears, inner elbows. Not the wrists if you are wearing bangles, and not anywhere the pallu will sit.
- Wait three to five minutes. This is the step everyone skips. The alcohol needs to flash off before fabric touches skin.
- Then drape. Never spray after draping, and never spray the saree "lightly" — there is no safe light spray on silk.
- If you want the extra hold fabric gives, use a cotton blouse lining or a plain cotton dupatta, not the Paithani itself.
Which scents suit a Paithani
A Paithani is worn at weddings, Gudi Padwa, Diwali padwa and family functions — occasions with room to be noticed.
- Kusum — jasmine, tuberose and rangoon creeper. Jasmine and a Paithani belong to the same world; this is the most natural pairing in the range.
- Pushpika — pear blossom and mandarin over gardenia and jasmine, finishing on patchouli and brown sugar. The warm base gives it real presence across a hall.

Storing the saree afterwards
