How to Wear Perfume With Mysore Silk

A Mysore silk saree is pure mulberry crepe woven with genuine gold zari, and the KSIC ones carry a gold-content mark for a reason. It is among the few garments in an Indian household where a routine mistake causes permanent, visible damage — and spraying perfume onto it is that mistake.

What perfume does to it

• Oil marks the crepe. Mysore silk has a fine, matte crepe texture that shows oil more obviously than a glossier weave. The stain often appears weeks later as a dulled patch.
• Alcohol attacks the zari. This is real gold-wrapped thread, not synthetic tinsel. Repeated alcohol contact dulls the metal, and no cleaning restores it.
• The damage is cumulative. One spray may show nothing. Ten wears with a spray each time will.

The correct order

1. Shower, dry, moisturise. Hydrated skin holds fragrance longer, so you need less.
2. Apply to skin only — throat, behind the ears, inner elbows. Not the wrists if you are wearing bangles, and nowhere the pallu will rest.
3. Wait three to five minutes so the alcohol flashes off before silk touches skin.
4. Then drape. Never spray after draping, and there is no safe light mist onto crepe.
5. For extra hold, scent a cotton blouse lining instead.

Which scents suit it

Mysore silk is worn to weddings, Dasara functions, Ugadi and temple occasions — settings with room for presence.

• Kusum — jasmine, tuberose and rangoon creeper. Mysore mallige and this scent occupy the same register; the most natural pairing in the range.
• Pushpika — pear blossom and mandarin over gardenia and jasmine absolute, finishing on patchouli and brown sugar. The warm base carries across a hall.

Storage
