Best Perfumes for a Marathi Wedding

Most Indian wedding fragrance advice assumes a night reception. A Marathi wedding often does not work that way: the muhurat is frequently in the morning, the hall is full of mogra garlands and jasmine veni, and there is haldi, ghee and food in the air from early on. A heavy evening scent in that setting is simply wrong by a few hours.

What the setting actually demands

• Morning light and rising heat. A dense amber that would be perfect at 9pm becomes airless by 11am under a mandap.
• Jasmine everywhere. Mogra and veni are already doing floral work in the room. You either join that register or step away from it — competing with it is the mistake.
• Silk and zari. Paithani, shalu, dhoti, pheta. Nothing may be sprayed onto any of it.
• Very close quarters for a long time, with relatives who will comment.

For the bride and family

Kusum — the natural choice

Kusum is jasmine, tuberose and rangoon creeper with almost no base beneath it. In a hall of mogra it reads as continuous with the occasion rather than as a competing perfume, and because there is nothing warm underneath, it does not build up through a long morning. One or two sprays.

Pushpika — for the reception

Pushpika is pear blossom, Italian mandarin and red berries over white gardenia, jasmine absolute and frangipani, landing on patchouli and a brown sugar accord. That warm base is what gives it presence across a hall — right for the evening function, slightly much for a morning muhurat.

For the groom and men

Vanraj — for the reception and sangeet

Vanraj is black pepper, cardamom and cinnamon over cedarwood, on amber, sandalwood, patchouli and musk. It is the only genuinely woody scent we make, and sandalwood belongs in this setting. Two sprays is plenty; three is a lot.

Neer — for the morning ceremony

Neer is citrus and marine over cedarwood and patchouli, with no sweetness in it. For a daytime muhurat in a warm hall, this is the correct weight. The clothing rule
