Pandal hopping is the hardest thing anyone in India asks a fragrance to do. You leave the house at eight in the evening and you are still walking at three in the morning. Neer — for the daytime and the hottest nights

Neer is bergamot, green tangerine and neroli over marine notes, jasmine and rosemary, on cedarwood and patchouli. The cleanest of the six. If the Puja falls early and the weather is still properly humid, or if you are out in the afternoon for Kumartuli and the idol-making paras, this is the more comfortable choice.

Kusum — for Anjali and the mornings

Kusum is jasmine into tuberose over rangoon creeper, and nothing else beneath it. For Pushpanjali, for Sandhi Puja, for a morning in a red-bordered saree, a single white floral sitting flush against the skin is the most fitting thing in the range — and its skin-close behaviour is exactly right for a crowded mandap. Pushpika — for close quarters and long days

Pushpika is pear blossom accord, Italian mandarin and red berries, into white gardenia, jasmine absolute and frangipani, over patchouli and a brown sugar accord. Soft and very close to the skin, which is a real virtue on a night with no personal space. Aaranya — for Kolkata's winter, not for Puja

Aaranya is Calabrian bergamot over Sichuan pepper, lavender and star anise, on Papua New Guinea vanilla and ambroxan. It is often assumed to be woody and it contains no wood notes at all; its base is warm. Warm plus a damp October crowd is the wrong combination. Come December, when Kolkata is cool and dry, Aaranya is one of the best things you can wear in the city.

The saree and panjabi rule

This is the part that costs people real money. Perfume stains silk, and it permanently dulls zari and metallic thread — which covers a Baluchari, a Garad, a red-bordered Tant, a Dhakai jamdani and the zari border of a good panjabi. Dry cleaning does not bring the thread back.
