How to Make Your Perfume Last Longer: 12 Proven Tips

How to Make Your Perfume Last Longer: 12 Proven Tips

You spent good money on a beautiful perfume — so why does it disappear an hour after you leave the house? Longevity is partly the fragrance and partly how you apply and store it. Master these 12 tips and almost any perfume will last dramatically longer.

Before you spray

  1. Moisturise first. Fragrance molecules cling to oil. Apply an unscented lotion, then perfume, and it holds far longer — especially helpful for dry skin.
  2. Apply straight after a shower. Warm, clean, slightly damp skin locks scent in.
  3. Choose a higher concentration. An extrait de parfum simply outlasts a light Eau de Toilette because it carries more oil.

How to apply

  1. Target pulse points. Neck, behind the ears, inner wrists, inner elbows — warm spots that diffuse scent.
  2. Don't rub your wrists together. It crushes and speeds up the top notes.
  3. Spray from about 15cm away for an even veil rather than one wet spot.
  4. Mist your hair ends and clothing lightly — fabric and hair hold scent longer than skin (test on clothes first).

Make it last through the day

  1. Layer. Matching body lotion or a light re-spray at midday extends the wear.
  2. Don't over-apply on day one. Your nose adapts; more sprays won't help — better application will.
  3. Match the fragrance to the season. Fresh scents in summer, warm woody ones in winter, as we cover in our Indian weather guide.

Storage

  1. Keep bottles out of sunlight and heat. A cool, dark cupboard preserves the oils — never leave perfume in a hot car or bathroom.
  2. Keep the cap on. Air and light slowly degrade fragrance over time.

Start with a long-lasting base

Good habits work best on a naturally long-wearing fragrance. Dabrana perfumes are all extrait de parfum, so they hold for hours: try the woody-amber Vanraj for maximum staying power, or the fresh Neer for hot days — both 50ml at ₹1,249.
